In math we are learning about doubles. Last week we read the Chinese folktale Two of Everything. In the story the Haktaks found a black pot and discovered that when they put an item into the pot, it doubled. We made a class book to go along with the story, and today students took home their very own copy!

THIS WEEK IN SCHOOL - SEPTEMBER 6 - 9

READING - This week in school we will begin reading. Our school uses the Reading Wonders program by McGraw-Hill. In the first few weeks our class will learn how to read fiction stories and nonfiction articles carefully. During this time our class will focus on ways to talk about their reading with partners, learn the steps of the writing process, and learn key phonics foundations using Fundations to build reading skills used in the Wonders program.

DIFFERENTIATED SPELLING LISTS WILL GO HOME THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 12th

MATH - This week in math we begin EnVision Math. Students will take an assessment just so I can see which skills students need to be taught in second grade. MATH HOMEWORK THIS WEEK IS TO COMPLETE THE 'MATH ABOUT ME' PROJECT BEING SENT HOME. The students will create Math People and they will be on display at Open House on September 13th.

WRITING - Students will be writing a descriptive paragraph about a person who is special to them. They also will continue to write in their journals, and will write a letter to a person living out of state.

A Work in Progress! We are getting there! This week was very busy for the students. We spent a lot of time building community in our classroom. The students listened to the books The Name Jar, Chrysanthemum, Tikki Tikki Tembo, First Day Jitters, and Don't Eat The Teacher. The students also made a name bar graph, a birthday pictograph, and a "Ways We Get Home" pictograph.  Next week we will begin math as our workbooks arrived this afternoon. The kids were very excited to get their second grade math workbooks! We will also begin reading and in science we will be comparing and contrasting frogs and toads. Thank you again for all of the donations to our classroom!
