HOW TO BE "PRACTICALLY PERFECT" ON PARCC / THIS WEEK'S SPELLING WORDS

This week's spelling words are words that students should be able to spell correctly when answering an open response question. The PARCC test, which will be administered after vacation on April 27, 28, 29, and later in May, has several open response questions based on selections that the students are given to read. Here is a list of words that are important for students to spell correctly:

1. text
2. author
3. because
4. evidence
5. paragraph
6. For instance
7. reason
8. first
9. second
10. next
11. finally
12. differences
13. alike
14. cause
15. effect

So how can a student be "practically perfect" on PARCC? There is no clear-cut answer. In fact, I would rather students to strive to be "perfectly PROUD" of their work! We have been practicing for the ELA portion of the exam in school this whole month. The students have been working very hard indeed! This week we will spend more time getting ready for it. On Friday, the students generated a list of important tips to help them be successful on PARCC:

1. PRINT neatly and clearly
2. Use capital letters when necessary (At the beginning of a sentence, when using proper nouns)
3. Indent when forming a paragraph
4. Be a READING DETECTIVE! Go back into the story to look for details, details, details! Our homework this past winter has helped students prepare for this. I know they can do it!
5. Use ending marks at the close of a sentence.
6. Read ALL OF THE DIRECTIONS AND QUESTIONS CAREFULLY! - Most important TIP!

On the night before the test, make sure your child gets to bed on time. On the morning of the test, make sure your child eats breakfast (whether at home or at school). I will not be assigning homework on the nights of the test! If you have any concerns at all, please send me an e-mail at elizabeth.wilson@leominster.mec.edu.
