Give to my classroom by November 22 and your donation will be doubled thanks to DonorsChoose.org. Just enter the code LIFTOFF on the payment page and you'll be matched dollar for dollar (up to $50).

If you chip in to help my students, you'll get awesome photos and our heartfelt thanks.

Thanks so much!

Bewitching Blueberry Pancakes Recipe

On Monday students will be reading one of my favorite seasonal books, Old Black Witch. In this adorable picture book, Old Black Witch is a pro at making blueberry pancakes. Here is the recipe if you want to try to make them at home!

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cup flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg
3/4 cup milk
3 tablespoons melted fat or oil
1/2 cup washed blueberries

As you stir in the blueberries (this is the magic part) say three times:

Gooble dee gook
With a wooden spoon,
The laugh of a toad
At the height of the moon!

Pour on a hot griddle and watch.

You can make things disappear just like Old Black Witch. Put three pancakes in front of any hungry boy or girl and watch them go!

There will be NO reading log assigned for Monday, October 31. A habitat project will be coming home on Tuesday for students to begin working on. Please save a shoe box for the project!

We're Off To See The Wizard!

We had a fantastic day at the Wizard of Oz Fair! The students watched a skit by the fifth grade students and listened to the JA chorus perform "Over the Rainbow". Then students took part in games and arts and crafts in the gymnasium. The day culminated the month-long school-wide read aloud of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!"

HERE'S WHAT WE ARE LEARNING THIS COMING WEEK

Writing - This week we are finishing up our personal narratives. A narrative is a real story about something that happened in a person's past. It includes a "small moment" with a lot of detail. A narrative can be about a vacation somebody took, a trip to the store, or riding a bike for the first time. It is factual and can include dialogue. We are learning about quotation marks, and how to properly use them in our writing.

Homework alert - Students on Tuesday will be coming home with a construction paper pumpkin that they will need to decorate and return to school on Wednesday. We will use the paper pumpkins to write dialogue in school.

Social Studies - We are concluding the first part of our social studies unit on maps and globes. For the past few weeks we have studied the continents and their locations. This week we are also studying the four major oceans. Students are coming home with a map of the world. They will be assessed on their knowledge of the locations of the seven continents and four oceans on Friday! Please help your child look over the study guide coming home on Tuesday! Students will be given a word bank to assist them on the test.

Math - We are continuing with our unit on arrays and even/odd numbers. Three times a week students take a "Mad Minute", and on Friday I take an assessment on how many problems a student can correctly solve within a minute and a half. Last week we focused on addition. This week we will continue with addition before moving on to subtraction. As the year goes along we will decrease the time to one minute. Please help your child study his or her basic facts to become more fluent in solving math facts. This will ultimately make solving word problems much easier for students.

Reading - In reading we will be learning about features of non-fiction texts. This week we are reading about different occupations , and students will come home later in the week with an assignment in which they need to interview a family member, relative, or friend about their job.

Walk to School Day was a huge success today! We had a fantastic time and even met the mayor! He told us that he received our letters and had been reading them. Thanks to all of the parents who walked with us. We had great weather and some of the kids asked if we could do this every day!

FRIYAY!!!!

Happy Friyay! One week left! What an awesome day it is out there! I can't wait for next week! Report cards, FIVE Google Meets (all fun)...
