8 3/4 weeks left! So much to do!

Spring vacation is finally nearing an end, and the kids come back to school tomorrow. We have a ton of activities planned this Spring. In addition to MAP and DIBELS testing later this Spring, students will be spending a lot of time in math learning about measurement and geometry. In writing, students will be conducting a research project focusing on an animal of their choosing. Students will be taking notes and writing their own book all about this animal. I expect this project will take several weeks to complete, and I'm hoping for the books to be published before the Poetry Open Mic. This week we are touring Leominster, and will be learning about the ongoings of our government, and how it works. We are visiting the Historical Society, the fire department, the library, and city hall. We will be getting ready for two different shows this spring: the Memorial Day program and a show we will be performing about our country's different heritages for the younger grades. Students will need a total of two white t-shirts. If you are able to donate any extras, that would be greatly appreciated. Information about the needed t-shirts is coming home on Monday. Reminder: The last week to turn in a Books and Beyond sheet is the first week in May!!!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

Spring has FINALLY sprung! We have a LOT of activities planned for the next few months. The students will be very busy working on the following activities and lessons:

*Getting ready for the Poetry Open - Mic "Author Showcase" on June 1st
*Preparing for the Memorial Day Show on May 26th
*Field Trip - downtown Leominster walking tour - April 25th
*Field Trip - Southwick Zoo - May 19th

*Learning how to write a 5 paragraph essay
*Creating an "All About Animal" research book
*Learning about our heritage
*Life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly
*Biography Buddy in-class project

Reminder - The last day to turn in a sheet for Books and Beyond is May 4th. The ceremony is on June 9th - time forthcoming. Happy Spring!

Matter Unit Kick Off

Students are learning about the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. Today we used Cheerios to demonstrate how atoms are distributed in solids, liquids, and gases. Did you know that atoms in gases move freely about, but atoms in solids are packed together tightly?

Down Syndrome Awareness Day!

Students wore crazy and mismatched socks on Tuesday, March 21. This was to raise awareness to Down Syndrome, and to raise money for a new oven in the Developmental Classrooms!  Check out the crazy socks!

EVENTS FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 20 - MARCH 24

Tuesday is Down Syndrome Awareness "Rock Your Socks Off" Day. For one dollar, kids can wear crazy and mismatched socks. Donations will go toward a new oven in the Developmental classroom.

Spring Picture Day is Friday, March 24.

We are beginning a new unit on matter in science. Today we learned that atoms are the building blocks of matter, and that there are three forms of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Stay tuned for some of the experiments students will be doing in science during the next few weeks.

Our class is at 75 percent fluency in Reflex Math. Keep on learning your facts! We are doing a great job!

Mayor Mazzarella Visits 2F!

Today was Community Reader Day, and Mayor Mazzarella visited our room to read "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" We had a great time. The mayor explained all about his jobs and all about his favorite places to visit. The kids were really inspired and afterward they wrote about where they want to go some day!
